They nailed the family vibe at Corona's Mexican Restaurant

They nailed the family vibe at Corona's Mexican Restaurant

Cozy and authentically decorated, it feels like someone’s home in Mexico. I was told that was on purpose; they want their customers to feel like family.

The waitstaff was exceptionally welcoming, music pulsed quietly in the air, and chopping sounds drifted from the kitchen. They nailed the family vibe at Coronas Mexican Restaurant.

A humble family local to BCS, they’ve asked to keep their names out of the article, because they prefer to keep the focus on their customers and community.

Community is of the highest importance to the family that owns Coronas Mexican Restaurant.

Corona’s original location, in Rockdale, Texas, opened in 2013. Then after much success, they decided to open a second location in their hometown, Bryan, Texas in 2018. They have a large menu full of recipes that have been handed down through three generations. They now have the capacity to cater, and often do for teachers and school staff because of their love for education professionals.

My tastings included a few of their signature dishes.

Starting with chips, red salsa, green salsa, and queso. Y’all already know me and my love of queso. This did not disappoint. It was melty and creamy, the perfect texture and cheesy flavor for queso. The red sauce was delish and classic, but that green sauce. A little spice, super creamy, cool and refreshing. Y’all, I tried hard to get that recipe, but that was a no-go. They were willing to tell me that it’s their most popular item, it’s a long-held family recipe, and it is not a tomatillo sauce. It was so good though, that I almost could’ve used a straw instead of chips. Don’t judge!

The next plate to come out was the Coronas enchilada plate. Four enchiladas stuffed with tender, juicy beef fajita meat, then each one was topped with a different house-crated sauce. Getting to experience each of the sauces, verde, creamy poblano, queso, and traditional gravy, is a lot of fun for me, I enjoy the variety. Overall, on this plate, I think the verde sauce was actually my favorite.

The El Vaquero Chicken plate was a well-seasoned chicken breast, topped with sliced and grilled red onions, jalapeno peppers, and mushrooms, then covered with melted cheese. Served with rice, charro beans, rice, pico, and homemade warm tortilla.

Rice is not always my favorite, because sometimes it can be dry and bland, but this rice was divine; fluffy and flavorful.

The charro beans might have been my favorite part of the whole meal. Tender beans that had simmered in a broth full of rich and complex flavors. The garlic, onions, and cilantro marry with all of the other seasonings to create heaven in a bowl.

Whether you take the backroads to Rockdale or stop in at the Bryan location, tell ‘em I said hi! And make sure you let me know what you ordered - I may want to try it next time!
