I don’t know who needs to hear this, but you need a pecan cinnamon roll in your life. A big, sticky, sweet, warm pecan cinnamon roll, fresh and homemade, alongside a Cookie Butter Caramel Apple latte at Lissa’s Restyled Sip & Shop.
At Lissa’s, you can enjoy a warm cup of coffee and a cinnamon roll, or a glass of wine and browse her cute shop while you wait on a pizza. Then enjoy the rest of the day strolling the shops or events in Downtown Caldwell, Texas.
Basically a perfect Saturday.
Lissa was a bookkeeper in her previous life and enjoyed refinishing furniture in her spare time. Then one day her dream found a voice, and she told her husband that she had a dream of opening a coffee shop. As her biggest supporter, he told her to start looking. She soon found a building in downtown Caldwell, built in the 1850’s, that had sat, unkept, as a storage space for years. The owner had refused to sell to everyone who’d previously enquired about it, but when Lissa inquired he decided it was time.
After purchasing, they had to completely gut and remodel the entire building; redoing everything except the original brick and ceiling.
Lissa opened in 2016, and just as she was getting in her groove, Covid hit and she thought she was going to lose it all. She told me that he remembers telling her husband that after everything she’d worked for, she was going to lose her dream. Thankfully, the community embraced her and the shop and continued to support them. She says they really loved on her extra during that time, and because of them, she made it through.
Coffee and pastries in the morning, wine and snacks in the evening was the original plan. It has since evolved to full meals, such as burgers, sandwiches, pizzas, kolaches and breakfast tacos, pies, cakes and so much more! It’s also a great place to pick up a bottle of wine and other cute gifts.
All of Lissa’s breads are homemade, marbled rye, molasses bread, even the pizza crust. Her great-grandmother showed her the love of baking, and now she brings it to her shop. She remembers how, after school, walking towards her great-grandmother’s house they could tell what she was baking by the smell wafting through the air.
Breads aren’t the only family recipe served, the chicken salad is also a family recipe and was served on the molasses bread which was soft and moist. The pasta salad on the side was creamy and fresh, with the perfect hint of sweetness. We also got to try the Ruben, with Lissa’s house crafted Russian dressing, which was creamy with a little pop.
All of the meat at Lissa’s is locally sourced. The Heavy Haul Burger was a big ‘ol beef patty with aged cheddar and swiss cheeses, sauteed onions and mushrooms, then thick cut bacon to top all of that. Then served with a side of fresh hand-cut fries that were dusted with her secret seasoning. This burger couldn’t have been any more delicious!
Lissa is half Swedish and half Czech and we got the opportunity to learn the difference between a kolache, and a klobasniky. If you ask for a kolache, you’re getting something sweet and delicious, if you ask for a klobasniky, you’re getting something savory - and in my opinion, even more delicious. If you can’t pronounce klobasniky, just say you want a “Not Kolache”. They’ll know what you mean. Our favorite kolache was the blueberry cream cheese, but the poppy seed, cream cheese, and raspberry cream cheese were also all so amazing. They were all topped with a delicate crumble topping, which I especially appreciated. The klobasniky were sausage and cheese, and jalapeno sausage and cheese. They had a huge hunk of sausage inside a light wrap of dough.
I can’t even explain how much we loved the pizza. The crust was thin, crispy, and light. The mozzarella was salty and creamy. The sauce was a rich tomato flavor, and a tiny bit sweet. One half was pepperoni, with huge, crispy pepperonis. The other half was margarita with fresh, sweet cherry tomatoes. Both were incredible!
Y’all, the show-stopper though was that pecan cinnamon roll. So warm, soft and fluffy, it melts in your mouth. The perfect amount of homemade glaze is drizzled over the top, the cinnamon is in perfect harmony with the delicate bread, and the pecans sprinkled like little angel kisses on top. I don’t know if you can tell, but this was my favorite of the day! And it was HUGE, like the size of my head-huge (and that was the small one!)
